The Wind Cap

There was once a lad who wanted to be a sailor but his mother would not let him go to the sea.
এককালে এক ছেলে ছিল যে নাবিক হতে চেয়েছিল কিন্তু তার মা তাকে সমুদ্রে যেতে দিতেন না।
"Child, what do you know of sailing?" she would say.
“বাছা, নাবিকের কাজের তুমি কী জান?” তিনি বলতেন।
"You're a farmer's son, you know the turn of the seasons and the smell of the soil but you do not know the sea."
“তুমি কৃষকের ছেলে, তুমি ঋতুদের আবর্তন আর মাটির গন্ধ জান কিন্তু তুমি সমুদ্রকে জান না।”
Now the boy whose name was Jon, had always obeyed his mother.
ওই ছেলেটি যার নাম ছিল জন, সে সবসময়েই তার মায়ের কথা শুনত।
So he went about his farm work with a heavy heart but did not again mention the sea.
তাই সে বিষণ্ণ হৃদয়ে সমুদ্রের কথা আর না বলে তার খামারের কাজে নেমে পড়ল।
One day, he had been walking behind the plough.
একদিন, সে লাঙল চালাচ্ছিল।
He all but ran over a tiny green turtle on a clod of dirt.
কাদার একটা দলার উপর একটা ছোট্ট সবুজ কচ্ছপকে সে প্রায় মাড়িয়ে ফেলেছিল।
He picked the turtle up and set it on his head where he knew it would be safe.
সে কচ্ছপটাকে উপরে তুলল আর তার মাথার উপরে বসাল যেখানে সে জানত ওটা নিরাপদে থাকবে।
When he was done with ploughing, Jon plucked the turtle from his head.
তার লাঙল চালানোর কাজ শেষ হল যখন, জন কচ্ছপটাকে তার মাথা থেকে পেড়ে আনল।
To his utter surprise he found that it had turned into a tiny green fairy man that stood upon his palm and bowed.
অত্যন্ত আশ্চর্য হয়ে সে দেখল যে ওটা একটা ছোট্ট সবুজ পরিমানব হয়ে গিয়েছে, যে তার তালুর উপর দাঁড়িয়ে আছে আর তাকে অভিবাদন জানাচ্ছে।
"I thank you for your kindness, tell me your heart's desire and I'll grant it to you for saving my life," said the fairy.
“আমি তোমার দয়ালু প্রকৃতির জন্য তোমাকে ধন্যবাদ জানাই, তোমার মনের ইচ্ছের কথা আমাকে বলো, আর আমি তা মঞ্জুর করব আমার প্রাণ বাঁচানোর জন্য,” পরিমানবটা বলল।
Jon bowed back but said nothing.
জন প্রত্যাভিবাদন জানাল কিন্তু কিছু বলল না।
Although his heart yearned to go out to the sea, he did not express his wish.
যদিও তার মন আনচান করছিল সমুদ্রে যাওয়ার জন্য, সে তার ইচ্ছে প্রকাশ করল না।
The green fairy man could read a heart easily so he said, "I see you wish to go sailing".
পরিমানবটা মনের কথা পড়তে পারত সহজেই তাই সে বলল, “আমি দেখতে পাচ্ছি তুমি সমুদ্রে পাড়ি দিতে চাও।”
Jon's face answered for him.
জনের অভিব্যক্তি তার হয়ে উত্তর দিয়ে দিল।
since you put me on your head like a hat to keep me safe, I shall give you a different kind of cap in return, the kind sailors most desire.
“তুমি যেহেতু আমাকে তোমার মাথায় একটা টুপির মতো বসিয়েছিলে আমাকে নিরাপদে রাখার জন্যে, আমি তোমাকে বিনিময়ে একটা অন্য ধরনের টুপি দেব, যে ধরনের টুপি নাবিকরা সবথেকে বেশি আকাঙ্ক্ষা করে।
A cap full of wind.
একটা হাওয়ায় ভরা টুপি।
But there's one warning, no human hand will ever be able to take it off."
কিন্তু সাবধান, কোনো মানুষের হাত টুপিটাকে খুলতে পারবে না।”
Then with a blink, the fairy man disappeared leaving a striped cap behind.
তারপর চোখের পলকে একটা ডোরাকাটা টুপি রেখে দিয়ে পরিমানব উধাও হয়ে গেল।
Young Jon put the cap on his head and ran home to tell his mother.
ছেলেমানুষ জন টুপিটা মাথায় গলাল আর ঘরে ছুটল মাকে বলতে।
"No good will come of the wind cap," she said.
“হাওয়া-টুপিটার থেকে ভালো কিছু হবে না,” তিনি বললেন।
But the lad would have none of her cautions.
কিন্তু ছেলেটি মায়ের কোনো হুঁশিয়ারি শুনতে রাজি নয়।
The very next day, putting on the sailor's cap, he ran off to the sea.
পরের দিনই নাবিকের টুপি পরে সে ছুটল সমুদ্রের দিকে।
On seeing a ship anchored near the shore, he requested the captain to take him along.
একটা জাহাজ তীরের কাছে নোঙর ফেলে দাঁড়িয়েছিল দেখে, সে ক্যাপটেনকে অনুরোধ করল তাকে সঙ্গে নেওয়ার জন্য।
Thus began his first ever sea voyage!
এভাবে শুরু হল তার প্রথম সমুদ্রযাত্রা !
Well, the wind cap worked as the fairy had said but that one condition prevailed!
হল কি, পরিমানবটা যেমন বলেছিল হাওয়া-টুপিটা তেমনই কাজ করল কিন্তু সেই একটা শর্ত বজায় থাকল!
Now that was both bad and good.
এখন শর্তটা ছিল মন্দ আর ভালো – দুই-ই।
It was bad because Jon could neither take his cap off before his captain nor at bedtime!
মন্দ এইজন্য যে জন তার টুপিটা না তার ক্যাপটেনের সামনে খুলতে পারত, না শোওয়ার সময়ে।
And it was good because neither could he lose the cap nor could it be stolen from him.
আর ভালো কারণ টুপিটা না সে হারিয়ে ফেলতে পারবে, না সেটা তার কাছ থেকে চুরি করা যাবে।
Since it was wind that sailors called for, and wind that Jon could supply he soon became very popular.
যেহেতু নাবিকদের যা দরকার তা হচ্ছে হাওয়া, আর জন ছিল হাওয়ার জোগানদার, সে অচিরেই খুব জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠেছিল।
When he twisted the cap he could summon the east wind and the west wind.
সে যখন টুপিটাকে বাঁকাত সে হাজির করতে পারত পূর্বের হাওয়া আর পশ্চিমের হাওয়া।
He could also turn it to call both the north as well as the south wind.
টুপিটাকে সে উত্তরের এবং দক্ষিণের হাওয়া ডাকতেও ঘোরাতে পারত।
The captain would therefore never part with his prized sailor and let him ashore.
ক্যাপটেন তাই তার মহামূল্যবান নাবিকটিকে কখনও ছাড়েননি আর তাকে ডাঙায় ফিরতে দেননি।
For a year and a day, young Jon did not set foot on land.
এক বছর আর একদিনের জন্য ছেলেমানুষ জন ডাঙায় পা রাখেনি।
He saw nothing but the churning of the waves.
শুধু ঢেউয়ের প্রচণ্ড আন্দোলন ছাড়া আর কিছুই সে দেখেনি।
Soon there grew in his heart a strong desire to see the land.
শীঘ্রই তার মনে ডাঙা দেখার তীব্র আকাঙ্ক্ষা জেগে উঠল।
Oh, let me go ashore just for one day," he begged the captain when they had sighted land.
“ওঃ, আমাকে শুধু একদিনের জন্য ডাঙায় যেতে দিন,” সে ক্যাপটেনকে আর্জি জানাল যখন ডাঙা তাদের নজরে পড়ল।
He promised he would return but the captain was unmoved.
সে কথা দিল যে সে ফিরে আসবে কিন্তু ক্যাপটেন অনড় রইলেন।
However, Jon could not stop dreaming of the land.
যাই হোক, জন ডাঙার স্বপ্ন দেখা থামাতে পারল না।
One quiet afternoon, he lay fast asleep and fell to dreaming again.
এক শান্ত দুপুরে, সে গভীরভাবে ঘুমিয়ে পড়ল আর আবার স্বপ্ন দেখতে থাকল।
Unknown to him, the ship stood offshore from his old farm.
তার অজান্তে, জাহাজটা এসে দাঁড়াল তার পুরোনো খামার থেকে সামান্য কিছুটা দূরেই।
In Jon's dream the seasons turned rapidly and as each turned, so did Jon in his bed.
জনের স্বপ্নের মধ্যে ঋতুগুলো তাড়াতাড়ি বদলাতে থাকল আর প্রত্যেকটা ঋতু যেভাবে আবর্তিত হল, জনও সেভাবেই পাশ ফিরতে লাগল তার বিছানায়।
Consequently, the cap on his head twisted round and about.
একই সঙ্গে তার মাথার টুপিটাও গোল গোল করে এদিক-ওদিক পাক খেতে লাগল।
It called up a squall from the clear sky that hit the ship without a warning.
ব্যাপারটা পরিষ্কার আকাশ থেকে হঠাৎ দমকা ঝড় ডেকে আনল যা কোনো সতর্কবার্তা বিনাই আছড়ে পড়ল জাহাজটার উপর।
The wind had been whirling about the boat tearing the sails and snapping the spars.
ঝড়টা জাহাজটার চারদিকে বাঁইবাঁই করে ঘুরতে ঘুরতে পালগুলোকে ছিঁড়ে ফেলল আর মাস্তুলগুলোকে মড়মড় করে ভেঙে ফেলল।
"It's his fault," the sailors cried.
“যত নষ্টের গোড়া ও,” নাবিকরা আর্তনাদ করল।
They shouted in anger and fear and tried to rip the cap off his head.
তারা রাগে আর ভয়ে চিৎকার করতে লাগল আর চেষ্টা করল তার মাথা থেকে টুপিটাকে ছিঁড়ে বের করতে।
Well, they were unsuccessful, for it was a fairy cap.
যাই হোক ওরা তা পারল না, কারণ ওটা ছিল জাদু টুপি।
They pulled it and twisted it and so the squall became a storm, the mightiest they had ever seen.
ওরা ওটাকে টানাটানি করল আর বেঁকাল আর তাই ঝড়টা পরিণত হল একটা প্রচণ্ড প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগে, তাদের দেখা সবথেকে জোরালো দুর্যোগ।
The captain ordered his men to bring Jon before him.
ক্যাপটেন তার লোকজনদের আদেশ দিলেন জনকে তার সামনে হাজির করতে।
In anger, he grabbed him by the tail of his striped cap, twisted him thrice and flung him out to the sea.
রাগের চোটে তিনি জনকে তার ডোরাকাটা টুপির প্রান্ত ধরে তিনবার ঘোরালেন আর সমুদ্রে সজোরে ছুঁড়ে দিলেন।
But the winds called up by the cap spun the ship three times around.
কিন্তু টুপির মারফত ডেকে আনা বাতাসের ঝাপটাগুলো জাহাজটাকে তিনবার বনবন করে ঘুরিয়ে দিল।
As Jon went under the waves, the cap came off his head.
জন যখন ঢেউয়ের তলায় গিয়ে পড়ল, টুপিটা তার মাথা থেকে খুলে গেল।
Soon the storm stopped, and Jon swam ashore.
অবিলম্বে ঝড় থেমে গেল, আর জন সাঁতার দিয়ে তীরে এসে উঠল।
The cap followed him.
তার পেছনে পেছনে ভেসে এল টুপিটা ।
When he got to the land, Jon picked up the cap and ran home to his mother and farm.
সে যখন ডাঙায় পৌঁছোল, জন টুপিটাকে তুলে নিল আর ছুটল ঘরে তার মায়ের কাছে, আর খামারে।
Again in the winter, when the snow lay heavy on the fields, he began to dream of the sea.
আবার শীতকালে, যখন খেতের উপরে ভারী বরফ জমল, সে সমুদ্রের স্বপ্ন দেখতে শুরু করল।
Jon went to the wardrobe, got out the fairy cap and stared at it for a long moment.
জন আলমারির কাছে গেল, জাদু টুপিটাকে বের করল আর সেটার দিকে তাকিয়ে থাকল বেশ কিছুক্ষণের জন্য।
Tucking it in his shirt, he ran out to the field.
তার জামায় সেটাকে গুঁজে নিয়ে, সে ছুটে খেতে চলে গেল।
He placed the wind cap under a stone where he knew the fairy man would find it.
সে হাওয়া টুপিটাকে একটা পাথরের নীচে রাখল যেখানে সে জানত পরিমানব সেটাকে খুঁজে পাবে।
Then he left again for the seas.
তারপর সে আবার সমুদ্রের জন্য বেরিয়ে পড়ল।
For the rest of his life, Jon spent half the year on a ship and half on the shore till at last he owned his own boat and a hundred acre farm land.
জন তার বাকি জীবনে, বছরের অর্ধেকটা কাটাত জাহাজে আর অর্ধেকটা তীরে যতদিন না সে মালিক হল তার নিজের নৌকোর আর একশো একর কৃষিজমির।
From then on he came to be known as Captain Turtle for he was as much at home on the water as he was on the land.
সেই থেকে তাকে সবাই চিনত ক্যাপটেন টাল বলে কারণ সে জলে যতটা স্বচ্ছন্দে থাকত ততটাই থাকত ডাঙায়।
